﷽
The seventh name we will be discussing and learning about is ‘Al-Muhaymin’ – The Protector, The Bestower of Security, The Guardian, The Safeguarder
Al-Muhaymin is the One who ensures well-being. The One who extends wings of love to cover and protect creation; the One who is ever watchful. The One who protects and guards; the One who offers peace and security. The One who proclaims the Truth.
Allah calls Himself Al-Muhaymin on one occasion in the Quran. The word ‘Muhaymin’ comes from the root haa-meem-noon , which points to three main meanings.
- The first main meaning is to oversee, protect, and guard
- The second is to witness
- The third main meaning is to determine the truth.
So, how can we live by this name?
1) Be aware that Al-Muhaymin is watching you.
The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you.’ [at Tirmidhee] Al-Muhaymin sees every deed you do; He observes your reactions to situations and even witnesses your inner thoughts. Remind yourself constantly of this fact and let it motivate you to stay away from sins and temptations. Al-Muhaymin will protect you from harm and even from committing sins if you are mindful of Him and keep remembering Him in your actions. Remember Him and all He does for us, do dhikr often and remember that He ﷻ is always watching.
2) Accept His decree.
Believe with certainty that what Al-Muhaymin gives to you or keeps away from you is good for you, even though it does not always seem like it. He ﷻ is overseeing everything and everything is part of His plan. Look more towards what possible good may come from the situations that test you and work towards complaining less about them, Al-Muhaymin will always guide and protect you and will always do what is best for you. Accepting and being content with His qadr (decree) is the true key to the tranquillity in our hearts, the tranquillity that we are long for but cannot find in anything else.
3) Use the Quran, the muhaymin!
Reading the Quran as itself is a beautiful act of worship, but it’s equally important to interact with it, implement it, and try memorise as much of it as we can. The Quran is muhaymin, trustworthy in highness, and a witness. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Verily, Allah elevates some people with this Quran and abases others.’ [Muslim] Those who fulfil the rights of the Quran will be raised high in this world and in the hereafter, so work to make the Quran a witness for you and not against you. Build a relationship with it, it is literally the word of Allah and it brings so much peace to us when we read it. Whilst it is a great thing to read a whole chapter a day or memorise the whole Quran, reading as much as an ayah or two everyday can go a very long way. Try creating a small routine, maybe after a certain salah you sit down and read what you can for five minutes, then maybe after the next salah have read into its translation, whatever fits best for you. Remember that we are rewarded based on our intentions so renew your intentions and may Allah make it easy for us all.
4) Ask Al-Muhaymin.
‘Indeed the deen of Islam is itself manners, where anyone that surpasses you in manners, is better than you in deen.’ [Ibn al-Qayyim] While working on your character, never think you cannot change for the better, and ask Al-Muhaymin to help you. Ask Him to protect you from your own weaknesses and know that Al-Muhaymin’s protection for you is beyond limits. So whenever you are in a difficult situation, you are scared, or feel lost, call upon Allah using this name. He will always protect you and keep you safe.
5) Protect your heart.
The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.’ [Al-Bukharee] Our hearts are one of the greatest trusts/amaanahs given by Al-Muhaymin and they will be our most important witnesses when we stand before Him, so protect your heart. Gain knowledge about the types of spiritual diseases of the heart mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah and their symptoms, assess yourself, and then look to find the cure. Scholars have mentioned four of the greatest poisons of the heart as: unnecessary talking, unrestrained glances, too much food, and keeping bad company. So purify your hearts and work towards keeping it safe from the distractions in this world, remember our purpose here and remember Allah often.
Call upon Allah, Al-Muhaymin, knowing He the One who ensures our well-being. Ask Him to make us mindful of Him in everything we do and aid us in accepting and being content with His decree in both, good and bad times. Ask Him to make the Quran our close companion and a witness for us, protect and cure our hearts from its diseases, and protect us at all times, from ourselves and others, in this life and in the Hereafter. May Allah shower His peace upon you all and may He guide our every step. May He protect us and our loved ones and allow us to enter His kingdom of Jannah with them. May He purify our intentions and increase us in imaan. Ameen.
JazakAllah khayr for taking the time to read this, I pray it has benefitted you – please share this with anyone who you think may benefit as well – and as mentioned in previous posts, I am raising funds this Ramadan for much-needed permanent homes in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, if possible please share and donate to this link.
We often forget and take for granted our blessings, something as little as a roof over our heads, clean drinking water and warm food, others can only dream about. This Ramadan we’re doing our bit to help change that, by building homes for those less fortunate in the impoverished villages of Azad Kashmir. Each home will have 2 Rooms, a Kitchen, bathroom, enough to house 6 people, clean drinking water, electricity and best of all, the residents will have free healthcare for life! Zakat is applicable.
